Acknowlegements

We would like to recognize and support three nonprofit organizations that work to make a difference in the San Juans. We will donate 5% of our new-customer beef sales to whichever organization the new-customer wishes.

KWIAHT is a research cooperative of local scientists and students started by Russell Barsh and Madona Murphy. Russell & Madona are a dynamic team and bring an amazing wealth of experience and education to the San Juans. They study the current and historic ecosystems of the San Juans and share their work with school students countywide. KWIAHT has helped us to monitor and understand the impact of our grazing agriculture at Sweet Grass Farm. KWIAHT means a spiritually clean place in the Native language of Puget Sound."

The San Juan Preservation Trust plays an important roll in saving critical lands in the county from development. The “Trust” successfully spearheaded the effort to purchase and protect Turtle Back Mountain on Orcas Island. Their conservation easements also protect working farmland including the land we are fortunate enough to farm. These easements are critical to the continuation of agriculture for future generations in the San Juans.

Friends of the San Juans works on many fronts including environmental monitoring and education. I have gotten to know this hardworking group through their efforts in helping the county draft a workable Critical Area Ordinance for agricultural lands as mandated by the state. The “Friends” have put countless hours into the process. They have cared enough to visit farms to learn about the impacts and opportunities that regulatory policies create.
